John Landis erzählt auf Trailers from Hell ein bisschen was zum tschechischen Jules Verne-Mashup-Film „The fabulous World of Jules Verne“ und vor allem, wenn er sagt „Any Film with a giant Octopus is pretty good“, dann hat er einfach nur Recht.
The imaginative films of Czech animator/director Karel Zeman were poorly served in the West, usually presented if at all in heavily Americanized recuts. This brilliantly designed 1957 gem wasn’t released in the US until four years later and in the wrong screen ratio (the trailer obviously cuts off the top and bottom of the 1:33 frame).

A fantasy-adventure film with special effects, made in a unique way using the illustrations By Rion and Benne from the novel of the same title. Professor Roch works together with his assistant Hart on the invention of a new implosive substance. One stormy night, they are both kidnapped by an unknown pirate ship. The leader of the pirates, Count Artigas, offers Ruch huge financial means, and labs with modern equipment, so that he can complete the work on his invention. The professor, seduced by science, willingly accepts the offer. He is accomodated in Artigascastle in Back-Cup, a town under the sea, built in the crater of an extinct island volcano. But his assistant Hart is not so credulous. He refuses all offers to cooperate, and is imprisoned in a hut on the island. He tries to warn the professor and manages to send off a small balloon with a warning message.

ich mag die karel zeman Filme. wird zeit dass die mal die DVD-VÖ erfahren die sie verdienen.
in deutsch heisst der film übrigens “die erfindung des verderbens” und gibs auch auf dvd, die bildquali ist allerdings schrecklich. Aber das kennt man ja auch von “reise in die urzeit”.
ich finds schade dass da nicht mit mehr Liebe an die VÖ (zb mit ordentlicher Bildrestaurierung) gegangen wurde, denn gerade die animierten Karel Zeman Filme können durchaus auch heute noch bestehen – gerade wegen ihrer aussergewöhnlichen Machart.

“Erfindung des Verderbens” hat mich als Kind nachhaltig beeindruckt. Ich glaube, dass der Stil von Zeman sogar heute noch die Bilder meiner Träume beeinflusst.
Und eine angemessene DVD-Veröffentlichung, die v.a. Einblick hinter die Kulissen gibt, ist tatsächlich längst überfällig.
