Secret Cinema brought to life Carol Reed’s ‘The Third Man’ at the Farmiloe Building in the secret streets and alleyways of Clerkenwell, London, through to the backstreets of Kabul, Afghanistan.

Over 19,000 of you travelled to Vienna becoming part of Harry Lime’s Rogue racket, Major Calloway’s investigation patrols and Crabbin’s British Cultural Office. A photographer from the Vienna Times documented the happenings here and a filmmaker from Future Shorts London Productions made this film.

Schöne Meldung von Hammer Films! Die restaurieren über 30 ihrer Klassiker für aufwändige BluRay-Releases. Den Anfang macht natürlich Dracula, inklusive einer längeren Todesszene aus der japanischen Version des Films, das Teil erscheint im März, weitere folgen verteilt im ganzen Jahr, unter anderem „Plaque of the Zombies“, „The Legend of the 7 Golden Vampires“, „Frankenstein Created Woman“ und „The Mummys Shrout“. Zur Restaurations-Aktion haben sie auch ein eigenes Blog aufgesetzt, das ich mir grade in den Feedreader gepackt habe. Leider finde ich kein Wort zu meinem Lieblings-Hammer „The Curse of the Werewolf“. Abwarten.

Dracula Prince of Darkness is the first title scheduled for release in the global restoration project and will be released in the UK in conjunction with STUDIOCANAL in March 2012. The partnership continues throughout the spring for the releases of The Reptile and The Plague of The Zombies, and will also include The Devil Rides Out, Rasputin the Mad Monk and The Mummy’s Shroud during the course of the year.

Hammer will also release definitive versions of its three hugely-influential original Gothic classics in the UK: The Curse of Frankenstein, Dracula and The Mummy.

As well as featuring a fully-restored HD picture and restored sound, the remastered films will boast a host of newly-filmed extras, including interviews with cast members. These documentary extras are being produced by Hammer expert and historian, Marcus Hearn – author of the recent “The Hammer Vault”.

Pinewood Studios carried out the restoration of the first three STUDIOCANAL titles after housing the original negatives for the films, restoring the original UK title sequence to The Plague of The Zombies as well as the UK title cards to Dracula Prince of Darkness.

Recently-discovered footage that was originally cut from the British version of Dracula has been restored by Molinare to the BFI’s 2007 restoration courtesy of The National Film Center at The Museum of Modern Art, Tokyo. The Japanese footage features an extended and particularly gruesome death scene for Dracula, as well as a moment considered too erotic by the censors of the day.

Following the discovery and restoration of the Japanese footage to Dracula, Hammer is keen to unearth further “lost” scenes and on-set footage from The Curse of Frankenstein, The Mummy and other titles in their library, and hope that any private collectors with viable unseen elements will contact the company.

Vor wenigen Tagen wurde auf YouTube ein über 20 Jahre altes und wenig bekanntes Interview mit dem besten Regisseur aller Zeiten, John Waters, hochgeladen. Kurz nachdem er mit “Hairspray” und bevor er mit “Cry Baby” erste Ausflüge in Mainstreamgefilde wagte, war Waters bei Clive James’ Show Saturday Night Clive zu Gast und präsentierte sich in absoluter Topform, u.a. über Hollywood und Modeverbrechen witzelnd. Etwa zur selben Zeit erschien seine Anekdotensammlung “Crackpot: My Obsessions”, das zu den witzigsten Büchern zählt, die ich jemals gelesen habe.

OH NO YOU DIDN’T! Uwe Bolls Firma Kinostar hat Rechte an einigen Charlie Chaplin-Shorts gekauft, die sie grade zusammenschneiden für einen abendfüllenden Spielfilm namens „Chaplin 3D – Little Tramp´s Adventure“. Mir ist grade ein Äderchen auf dem Auge geplatzt, aber man muss dem Mann ja eins lassen: Es ist schon ein ziemlich einmaliges Talent, bei wirklich jedem Projekt (und ja, ich fand auch Postal scheiße) so dermaßen daneben zu greifen, dass es rauscht. Chaplin in 3D von Uwe Boll… ein Teil von mir ist grade gestorben.

Die News ist geleakt, als Kinostar eine Mail verschickte, in der sie Unterstützung für das Projekt suchen:

One of our partners is currently working on the 3D conversion of classic black and white movies.

He has secured the rights and is in the middle of production of several Charlie Chaplin movies, which will form one 90 minute 3D movie titled “Chaplin 3D – Little Tramp´s Adventure”. The 3D looks amazing, much better than most of the conversions which were shown in theaters so far.

We are looking for a US deal or possible worldwide deal (excluding German speaking and Turkey). The producer of the 3D version is in town now, and we could show you during or in the days after AFM a short demo reel with the 3D footage in a theatre from DCP.

The idea to do a “prototype” was commissioned, to prove not only to themselves, but also to potential investors that they were capable of doing a full length horror film. The same year, at Michigan State, Raimi had been studying H. P. Lovecraft and was most impressed with Necronomicon, or simply The Book of the Dead. From these rough concepts, he concocted a short story where a group of four friends unwittingly dig up an Indian burial ground and unleash horrific spirits and demons. In the spring of 1979 filming of Within the Woods started over a three day weekend on a budget of $1,600.

Within the Woods, as well as serving as a prototype, had impressed the filmmakers. For a marketing strategy a screening was arranged at their former high school, with a positive response.

In Neuseeland haben sie drei (von sechs) Filmrollen des 1924 gedrehten „The White Shadow“ gefunden, dem ersten Film von Alfred Hitchcock. Just in time for the filmmaker’s 112th birthday, archivists and preservationists in New Zealand have announced the discovery of the first half of a 1924 film thought to be Alfred Hitchcock’s earliest surviving feature.

For The White Shadow, an atmospheric British melodrama picked up for international distribution by Hollywood’s Lewis J. Selznick Enterprises, Hitchcock is credited as assistant director, art director, editor and writer. He was 24 when he worked on the film; his feature directorial debut would come soon afterward on The Pleasure Garden (1925).

The film, which stars Betty Compson in a dual role as twin sisters — one angelic and the other “without a soul” — turned up among the cache of unidentified American nitrate prints safeguarded at the New Zealand Film Archive in Wellington. The first three reels of the six-reel feature were found; no other copy is known to exist.

The most iconic of the now-classic Jack Arnold/William Alland sci-fi pix and probably the most famous of sci-fi fan Richard Carlson’s numerous genre starring turns. Ditto for co-stars Richard Denning and the still-stunning Julia Adams. One of the greatest 3-D movies of the ’50s. Even Marilyn Monroe was moved by the Gill Man’s doomed beauty-and-the-beast plight.

Joe Dante hat auf dem neuen Blog zu Trailers From Hell einen Ausschnitt seines handgeschnittenen, siebeneinhalbstündigen (!) Moviemashups „The Movie Orgy“ gepostet.

In The Movie Orgy, Dante and Davison boldly and proudly mash up the sophisticated and the sophomoric. Their slice-and-dice aesthetic is hardly random though; the narrative lines of those sci-fi movies that provide what there is of the Orgy‘s spine are routinely violated by the intercutting of TV commercials, patches of industrial and sex education films and political speeches. Each time the movie lurches back into the “story” of whatever film is being revisited, the surrounding footage more often than not subtly, and sometimes not-so-subtly, provides deranged commentary on what preceded it.

Der US-Trailer zu “Splatter University” gehört zu den komischsten aller Zeiten (“Prepare to be pulverized, traumatized and hospitalized by Splatter University!”) und ist trotzdem wunderbar repräsentativ für die zahllosen Filme der glorreichen Slasher-Ära (von denen ich ca. 90% gesehen habe, worauf ich nicht unbedingt stolz bin). Die bloße Aneinanderreihung angedeuteter Mordszenen und bekloppter Trasheinlagen gibt im Übrigen tatsächlich einen guten Eindruck vom Film wider – der natürlich ziemlich stulle ist. Und schön auch, dass der Trailer ihn komplett spoilert.

„The Killer Shrews“ ist Trashhorror von 1959 mit gigantischen Ratten und der wird nun, knapp 50 Jahre später, fortgesetzt – mit James Best als Captain Thorne Sherman, der für die Rolle jetzt in „Return of the Killer Shrews“ zurückkehrt. Man mag ja von Remakes halten, was man mag. Aber die Idee, alte Trashklassiker fortzusetzen – mit Originalbesetzung! – finde ich toll. Denn ich will endlich ein Sequel zu „The Incredible Shrinking Man“ sehen, mit den Abenteuern von Scott Carey im subatomaren Weltraum.

A TV Reality Show hires Captain Thorne Sherman (James Best) and his boat to cargo supplies to the deserted offshore island they’re using as a filming location. Thorne would have refused the job because he’s been to that island before and stills sees it in his nightmares. Unfortunately, as the boat departs, Thorne is too hungover to realize where they’re going and his first mate Rook needs the money. So they sail — to a place Thorne Sherman never wanted to see again as long as he lived: the island of the Killer Shrews.

Ed Woods Transvestitenklassiker mit Bela Lugosi, für eine Woche auf Arte+7.

Ein älterer Wissenschaftler sitzt zwischen Chemielabor, Skeletten und staubigen Büchern in einem Sessel und warnt bei Blitz und Donner vor dem großen grünen Drachen, der auf der Türschwelle sitzt. Als gottesähnlicher Erzähler philosophiert er über das Treiben der Menschheit und den Beginn des Lebens.

Tatsächlich aber will er uns auf einen Todesfall hinweisen, der die Geschichte um Transvestitismus und Geschlechteridentitäten in Gang setzt – den Selbstmord des Transvestiten Patrick alias Patricia, der die Kriminalisierung seines Cross-Dressings nicht mehr ertragen konnte. Ergriffen von diesem Fall, sucht der ermittelnde Inspektor Warren den Psychiater Doktor Alton auf, einen Experten auf dem Gebiet des Transvestitismus.
Doktor Alton berichtet ihm von seinem Patienten Glen, der ein Doppelleben als “Glenda” führt. Glen steht vor der Entscheidung, seiner ahnungslosen Verlobten Barbara die Existenz von “Glenda” zu beichten. Doch er zögert aus Angst, dass sie ihn verlassen könnte, wie es die Ehefrau seines Freundes Johnny, ebenfalls ein Transvestit, getan hat. Erst nachdem Glen in einem langen Traum mit seiner eigenen Zerrissenheit konfrontiert wird, entschließt er sich, Barbara seine Faszination für Damenkleidung, speziell für Angorapullover, zu gestehen. Auf der Suche nach Hilfe begeben sich die beiden bei Doktor Alton in Therapie, der “Glenda” als Kompensationsmechanismus identifiziert: Glens Mutter hatte seine Schwester immer bevorzugt.

Um die Komplexität der Geschlechterkrise weiter zu verdeutlichen, erzählt Doktor Alton dem Inspektor von einem weiteren Patienten, von dem Hermaphroditen Alan, der nach einer Operation ein neues Leben als Anne beginnt.

BTTF.com hat den kompletten Clip mit der Biografie von Biff Tannen, der in der Biff Tannen-Museums-Szene in Back to the Future 2 zu sehen war. Der Clip kommt von einer VHS-Kopie eines Mitarbeiters am Film und war bisher noch nie zu sehen.

BTTF.com has recently uncovered a copy of the complete video monitor footage from the ‘Biff Tannen Museum’ scene in Back to the Future™ Part II which Marty McFly (Michael J. Fox) watches at the museum’s entrance while he’s looking for answers about his father’s demise.

This never-before-seen clip is an extension of the material we briefly see on film, featuring some elaborate glimpses into Biff Tannen’s (Tom Wilson) ill-gained rise to fame and power in Hill Valley.

The 3½ minute segment was digitized from an old VHS tape which had been saved by a Back to the Future fan with family connections to the film production at the time the sequels were shot in 1989-1990. To date, the following clip is not available on any other commercial collection, including the recently released 25th Anniversary Trilogy Blu-ray Disc and DVD boxed sets.

The little picture that could. Emerging from initial mini-budget obscurity to full fledged mainstream fame, this may be Roger Corman’s best known movie, despite the fact that most of the ostensible audience has probably never seen it. Subsequent incarnations have turned this wacky cult item into an unlikely piece of Americana.

Seit gestern strahlt Arte den englischen Serienklassiker The Prisoner aus und stellt die Folgen dankenswerterweise auch ins Netz. Oben die ersten drei Folgen von gestern.

Als ein hochrangiger Agent seinen Rücktritt einreicht, wird er gekidnappt und in ein merkwürdiges Dorf verschleppt. Dort trägt er nur noch den Namen Nummer 6, wie auch alle anderen Einwohner nur Nummern haben. Einige sind “Gäste” wie Nummer 6, andere gehören zu den Entführern. Diese versuchen, an sein Wissen und hinter die Beweggründe für seinen Rückzug vom Dienst zu kommen.
Was will man von ihm? Wurde er von den eigenen Leuten entführt oder von der Gegenseite? Wer ist die mysteriöse Nummer 1? Und wie kann man den seltsamen Ort verlassen? Wird ihm die Flucht gelingen? Nummer 6 versucht, Antworten auf all diese Fragen zu finden.

Trailers from Hell gibt derzeit Gas und holt hochkarätige Gastkommentierer. Nach Guillermo del Toro über „Dead and Buried“ darf jetzt Roger Corman himself den Trailer zu seiner Edgar Allan Poe-Verfilmung „Tales of Terror“ besprechen. Sehr schön!

Roger Corman takes us behind the scenes of his fourth Edgar Allan Poe adaptation, a three-story omnibus written by Richard Matheson. Vincent Price, Peter Lorre and Basil Rathbone seem to be having a swell time.
