O’Brien’s special gift, I suspect, was his heart-stopping honesty. He wrote an article for a book of mine about sex and disability (“CripZen: A Manual for Survival”), and I felt his personal revelations — about masturbation — were dandy but, well, a bit too personal. I asked if he didn’t want to use a pseudonym. He wouldn’t hear of it.

And when he finally, at age 36, had his first taste of love, with a sex surrogate, he wrote a long article about it that was published in several places, including the Sun magazine of North Carolina. The paragraph about looking at himself in the mirror always struck me as being one of the most poignant in all of disabled literature:

After she got off the mattress, she took a large mirror out of her tote bag. It was about two feet long and framed in wood. Holding it so that I could see myself, Cheryl asked what I thought of the man in the mirror. I said that I was surprised I looked so normal, that I wasn’t the horribly twisted and cadaverous figure I had always imagined myself to be.

THE IRON LADY is a surprising and intimate portrait of Margaret Thatcher (Meryl Streep), the first and only female Prime Minister of The United Kingdom. One of the 20th century’s most famous and influential women, Thatcher came from nowhere to smash through barriers of gender and class to be heard in a male dominated world.

‘I still don’t agree with a lot of her policies,’ said Streep. ‘But I feel she believed in them and that they came from an honest conviction, and that she wasn’t a cosmetic politician just changing make-up to suit the times. She stuck to what she believed in, and that’s a hard thing to do.

‘She’s still an incredibly divisive figure, but you miss her clarity today. It was all very clear and up front, and I loved that eagerness to mix it up and to make it about ideas.’
Of modern politicians, Streep added: ‘Today it’s all about feelings. You know, “How do I come off?” and, “Does this seem OK?”.

An insult? No, this shows why Maggie was so mighty. Left-wing star Meryl Streep tells Baz Bamigboye she now reveres the Iron Lady

Bonustrack nach dem Klick: Margaret Thatcher bringt im Parlament Monty Pythons Dead Parrot Sketch.

Neuer Trailer zu Roman Polanskis „Carnage“ mit Kate Winslet, Christoph Waltz, Jodie Foster und John C. Reilly nach dem Theaterstück „God of Carnage“ von Yasmina Reza. Das wird ganz, ganz großartig!

A showdown between two kids: about eleven, in a local playground. Swollen lips, broken teeth… Now the parents of the “victim” have invited the parents of the “bully” to their apartment to sort if out. Cordial banter gradually develops a razor-sharp edge as all four parents reveal their laughable contradictions and grotesque prejudices. None of them will escape the ensuing carnage.

A troubled high-school kid named Norman pretending to have cancer deals with problems involving his new girlfriend and terminally ill father. He must confront a set of conflicting emotions as he struggles to define his relationship with his father, his love for Emily, and ultimately who he will be as a young man.“

Schöner Trailer zu „Young Adult“ mit Charlize Theron, Patrick Wilson und Patton Oswalt, inszeniert von Jason Reitman, Drehbuch von Diablo Cody, die das letzte mal bei „Juno“ zusammenarbeiteten. Dürfte ziemlich schick werden.

Charlize Theron plays Mavis Gary, a writer of teen literature who returns to her small hometown to relive her glory days and attempt to reclaim her happily married high school sweetheart (Patrick Wilson). When returning home proves more difficult than she thought, Mavis forms an unusual bond with a former classmate (Patton Oswalt) who hasn’t quite gotten over high school, either.

Hier der erste Trailer zum Monroe-Biopic „My Week with Marilyn“, der die Story zwischen Sir Laurence Olivier und Norma Jean, gespielt von Michelle Williams, erzählt: „Colin Clark, an employee of Sir Laurence Olivier’s, documents the tense interaction between Olivier and Marilyn Monroe during production of The Prince and the Showgirl.“ Sieht gut aus!

Hier der komplette Plot:

In the early summer of 1956, 23 year-old Colin Clark (Eddie Redmayne), just down from Oxford and determined to make his way in the film business, worked as a lowly assistant on the set of “The Prince and the Showgirl.” The film that famously united Sir Laurence Olivier (Kenneth Branagh) and Marilyn Monroe (Michelle Williams), who was also on honeymoon with her new husband, the playwright Arthur Miller (Dougray Scott).

Nearly 40 years on, his diary account “The Prince, the Showgirl and Me” was published, but one week was missing and this was published some years later as “My Week with Marilyn” – this is the story of that week. When Arthur Miller leaves England, the coast is clear for Colin to introduce Marilyn to some of the pleasures of British life; an idyllic week in which he escorted a Monroe desperate to get away from her retinue of Hollywood hangers-on and the pressures of work.

(Youtube Direktmelt, via Twitch)

Richard (Thomas Jane), Ron (Jeremy Piven), Jonathan (Rob Lowe) and Tim (Christian McKay) are old college friends that gather annually for a week in Big Sur to celebrate their friendship and catch-up on each other’s lives. They seem like typical men in their forties – all with careers, families, and enormous responsibilities – but like most people there is a lot more beneath the surface.

As the week progresses, they go down the rabbit hole of excess as mountains of drugs are consumed to a blaring rock ‘n’ roll soundtrack. Parties with much younger women spin out of control. Exhausted and run ragged, they bare their souls to one another revealing the disillusionment with their lives. As the truth emerges, the reunion takes a much darker turn when a promise from their past is brought to light. From director Mark Pellington, I MELT WITH YOU is a visually dazzling, wild and wooly trip deep into the male psyche, driven by four amazingly committed and profound performances.

Warner Bros’ new film J. Edgar explores the public and private life of one of the most powerful, controversial and enigmatic figures of the 20th century. Directed by Clint Eastwood (Million Dollar Baby, Changeling, Gran Torino, Invictus, Hereafter) from a screenplay by Dustin Lance Black (Milk, “Big Love”), the film stars Leonardo DiCaprio as well as Armie Hammer, Naomi Watts, Josh Lucas, Judi Dench and Ed Westwick. The story traces Hoover’s life from his childhood through ascent to power in the 20s, his 50-year reign over the FBI, and death in 1972.

Hollywood 1927. George Valentin is a very successful silent movie star. The arrival of talking pictures will mark the end of his career. Peppy Miller, a young woman extra, becomes a major movie star.

From the play by Yasmina Reza, “God of Carnage”, the film focuses on two sets of New York parents (Jodie Foster and John C. Reilly and Kate Winslet and Christoph Waltz), the child of one of which has hurt the other at a public park. Despite trying to resolve things in a civilized way, things rapidly degenerate.

Totschicker Trailer zu George Clooneys „The Ides of March“ mit Ryan Gosling, Paul Giamatti, Marisa Tomei, Philip Seymour Hoffman, Jeffrey Wright und Clooney. Ich steh’ auf großleinwandkompatible Politdramen.

During the frantic last days before a heavily contested Ohio presidential primary, an up-and-coming campaign press secretary finds himself involved in a political scandal that threatens to upend his candidate’s shot at the presidency.

Set against a sweeping canvas of rural England and Europe during the First World War, “War Horse” begins with the remarkable friendship between a horse named Joey and a young man called Albert, who tames and trains him. When they are forcefully parted, the film follows the extraordinary journey of the horse as he moves through the war, changing and inspiring the lives of all those he meets—British cavalry, German soldiers, and a French farmer and his granddaughter—before the story reaches its emotional climax in the heart of No Man’s Land.

The First World War is experienced through the journey of this horse—an odyssey of joy and sorrow, passionate friendship and high adventure. “War Horse” is one of the great stories of friendship and war— a successful book, it was turned into a hugely successful international theatrical hit that is arriving on Broadway next year. It now comes to screen in an epic adaptation by one of the great directors in film history.

Hier das erste Poster für „This must be the Place“ mit Sean Penn als alterndem Goth-Rocker auf der Jagd nach Nazis in New New York, die seinen verstorbenen Vater in Auschwitz gefoltert hatten. Spike Jonzes 28minütiger Arcade-Fire-Kurzfilm “Scenes from the Suburbs” wird ab dem 27.

But that’s just me.

Curtis LaForche lives in a small Ohio town with his wife Samantha and six-year-old daughter Hannah, who is deaf. Curtis makes a modest living as a crew chief for a sand-mining company. Samantha is a stay-at-home mother and part-time seamstress who supplements their income by selling handmade wares at the flea market each weekend. Money is tight, and navigating Hannah’s healthcare and special needs education is a constant struggle. Despite that, Curtis and Samantha are very much in love and their family is a happy one.

Then Curtis begins having terrifying dreams about an encroaching, apocalyptic storm. He chooses to keep the disturbance to himself, channeling his anxiety into the obsessive building of a storm shelter in their backyard. His seemingly inexplicable behavior concerns and confounds Samantha, and provokes intolerance among co-workers, friends and neighbors. But the resulting strain on his marriage and tension within the community doesn’’t compare to Curtis’ private fear of what his dreams may truly signify.

Faced with the proposition that his disturbing visions signal disaster of one kind or another, Curtis confides in Samantha, testing the power of their bond against the highest possible stakes.

George Valentin is a silent movie star who all smiled. The arrival of talking pictures is going to sink into oblivion. Peppy Miller, a young dancer, she will be propelled in the firmament of stars. This film tells the story of their destinies, or how fame, money and pride can be obstacles to their love story.“ Im Infotext gibt’s den Plot auf Französisch, wenn jemand die Sprache besser beherrscht als Google, bitte ich um eine bessere Übersetzung in den Comments. Bis dahin: Der wird großartig!

Schickes Poster und schicker Trailer zu „The Future“ von Miranda July (Me and You and Everyone We Know), den unser’n Nilz bereits zur Berlinale gesehen hatte: „THE FUTURE tells the story of a thirty-something couple who, on deciding to adopt a stray cat, change their perspective on life, literally altering the course of time and testing their faith in each other and themselves.“
