Trailer zum neuen Spike Lee über ‘nen Teenager, der seine Ferien bei seinem Priester-Großvater in Brooklyn verbringt. Mag ich sehr, den Trailer (auch wenn da irgendwas mit der Tonspur nicht stimmt, pls ignore.)

The latest in Spike Lee’s Chronicles of Brooklyn anthology–which also includes “She’s Gotta Have It” (1986), “Do The Right Thing” (1989), “Crooklyn” (1994), “Clockers” (1995), and “He Got Game” (1998)–RED HOOK SUMMER tells the story of Flik Royale (Jules Brown), a sullen young boy from middle-class Atlanta who has come to spend the summer with his deeply religious grandfather, Bishop Enoch Rouse (Clarke Peters), in the housing projects of Red Hook.

Having never met before, things quickly get off on the wrong foot as Bishop Enoch relentlessly attempts to convert Flik into a follower of Jesus Christ. Between his grandfather’s constant preaching and the culture shock of inner-city life, Flik’s summer appears to be a total disaster–until he meets Chazz Morningstar (Toni Lysaith), a pretty girl his age, who shows Flik the brighter side of Brooklyn. Through her love and the love of his grandfather, Flik begins to realize that the world is a lot bigger, and perhaps a lot better, than he’d ever imagined.

Eine Zeitlang war Will Smith im Gespräch eines längst überflüssigen Remakes des Koreanischen Meisterwerks “Oldboy”. Man hätte mich 15 Jahre einsperren können, ich hätte mir den Film nicht angeschaut.

Jetzt ist allerdings Josh Brolin eingesprungen und Spike Lee führt Regie. Meine Neugierde ist geweckt. Auch wenn man jetzt schon davon ausgehen kann, dass der Remake absolut nichts von der Meisterhaftigkeit des koreanischen Originals haben wird (wie will man die Kampfszene im Flur übertreffen, oder die Folterszene mit den Zähnen?), reichen diese beiden Namen aus, um mich versöhnlich zu stimmen.

Für den Bösewicht ist übrigens Christian Bale im Gespräch. Kann man machen.

Vor ein paar Jahren hatte ich hier über ein geplantes Remake von Oldboy unter der Regie von Spielberg gebloggt, seit damals ist es um das Projekt ziemlich ruhig geworden. Nun ging vor ein paar Tagen das Gerücht ‘rum, dass Spike Lee die Regie übernehmen sollte und genau das wurde jetzt bestätigt.

Spike Lee erscheint mir zwar gleich 10 mal geeigneter für den Stoff (ganz abgesehen von der Diskussion, ob es überhaupt ein Remake braucht), dennoch kann ich mir auch einen Oldboy von Spike Lee nicht so richtig vorstellen. Wir werden sehen.

Los Angeles (July 11, 2011) – Mandate Pictures announced today that Spike Lee (Inside Man) will direct OLDBOY, a remake of the highly-acclaimed South Korean film. Mark Protosevich has adapted the screenplay and will co-produce. Roy Lee and Doug Davison (The Departed, The Grudge) will produce. The film is a Vertigo Entertainment/40 Acres & A Mule Production. Mandate President Nathan Kahane will executive produce.

“It’s a great honor to put this special project into the hands of such a gifted writer and iconic director,” said Kahane.

OLDBOY tells the story of a man who is kidnapped and imprisoned on his daughter’s birthday. For fifteen years, he is held captive, and, upon his release, must begin his journey to find the reason for his imprisonment. He soon finds out that his kidnapper has plans for him more tortuous than his solitary confinement. The original film, released in 2003, directed by Chan-wook Park won the Grand Prize Jury Award at the 2004 Cannes Film Festival.

Spike Lee and Mark Protosevich are represented by CAA. Dan Freedman, SVP of business affairs, negotiated the deals for Mandate.
